Malaysia: Penang

After a tiring 11 hour journey from Krabi, we finally arrived in Georgetown, Penang at 10.30pm. We were both exhausted, so we checked into the hostel, grabbed some street food and went to bed. We spent the next day exploring Georgetown and finding the infamous street art. We also visited the 3D Trick museum and took some funny photos.

The next morning we took a local bus up to Penang Hill, where we then took the quirky train up the hill - the train had been built diagonally to compensate for how steep the hill is!

We walked around the park and sat on a giant swing watching dusky leaf monkeys for a while. We were lucky enough to see a mum with her baby, but unfortunately they disappeared before we could get a photo. Finally we did the highlights of the park - the canopy bridge and sky walk. The views from both were spectacular!

On the way back out of the park, a couple of men working there pointed out a twin-barred flying snake lying in the shade just off the main path. This made us wonder how many other snakes we've probably walked past and not noticed!

Overall, our first impressions of Malaysia were really good. The locals seem friendly, local transport is really cheap and the roads are so much calmer than where we've been previously! There are also a lot more cars compared to bikes. Georgetown was also a surprise - we had both been expecting an older style town so when we arrived into what looked like should be Kuala Lumpar at night we were a bit confused! It turned out to be a great mix of traditional guesthouses, local cafes and large shopping malls. We even saw a cruise ship docked at one of the jetties. We're definitely excited to see what the rest of Malaysia has to offer.

Accommodation: 33 Stewart Houze, 3 nights, 68 RM for a double bed in a dorm. This hostel was a perfect location for exploring Georgetown and the rest of Penang. We were in a 4 bed dorm, but for the entire stay there was only us and one other couple in the room. As the beds were cubed off and had curtains across the front, it felt like having a private room. There wasn't a bathroom in the dorm, but we were right next to the communal ones so this wasn't an issue. Breakfast of unlimited toast, various jams and oatmeal was included. 8/10.
