Sri Lanka Day 9: Ella to Nuwara Eliya

As we didn't manage to do it yesterday, first thing this morning we walked over to Little Adam's Peak and climbed to the summit in about 30 minutes.

It's named by the locals as ‘Little’ Adam's Peak as it’s meant to be the same shape as Adam’s Peak.

The views from the top were just as gorgeous as those from Ella Rock; it's a beautiful area. It was a far quicker climb due to there being steps all the way up - and it’s not quite as high. We think we could see Ella Rock from the top, and could spot where we were standing yesterday.

Once we'd made it back down, we grabbed our bags from the guesthouse and headed down the hill in search of some lunch. We found a great local cafe at the end of the road which served huge portions of rice and curry, and delicious vegetable rolls and rotti. The staff were really friendly and pointed us in the right direction to get the bus to Nuwara Eliya, which is dubbed ‘Little England’ because of the buildings and streets apparently having an English feel.

The bus journey took about 2 hours as the road was really windy heading up around the mountains, but the views were really impressive.

Our hostel was just a short walk up the hill, out of the town. We were shown to a huge room where we changed into some warmer clothes (Nuwara Eliya is apparently the coldest town in the whole of Sri Lanka! Or so we were told by a local earier on our trip, we didn’t think it would be cold - just colder than the coast - but it is actually quite chilly) and explored the area for a bit before it got dark. The main town seemed to come alive at night and the streets were really busy. We grabbed some takeaway fried rice and some snacks from the supermarket and went back up to the hostel to eat and watch tv for a bit before bed.
