Sri Lanka Day 10: Nuwara Eliya to Delhousie and Adam’s Peak

We were served a Sri Lankan breakfast of what we believe should’ve been a rotti and curry and another form of Sri Lankan food that we don’t know the name of, all of which was cold so didnt eat much of it. After poking and moaning at our breakfast we left the hostel to explore more of Nuwara Eliya, which did seem to have a bit of an English feel in places. There were some big built up areas which looks quite wealthy, but there was also the opposite end of the scale on the far side of town.

After walking about 3km in the rain to reach Lake Gregory, we realised the gates were shut and if you were 'foreign' you had to pay 200rs, compared to the 50rs fee for locals. As we had to catch a bus to Delhousie, we decided against walking around the lake and walked back past the race course, where there were people offering pony rides around the track.

At the bus stop, we were pointed in the direction of a bus that went to Hatton, where we then changed for another to Maskilya, and another later to Delhousie. We noticed that in Maskilya more of the women wore saris, and they all seemed more intricately decorated than those we'd seen in places before. The women also wore more jewellery and decorated their hair with flowers.

The final bus to Delhousie was packed with both locals and travellers like us who were intending to climb Adam's Peak. We reached Delhousie in about half an hour, and a friendly woman from the bus walked us to our guesthouse. She thanked us for visiting as the village relies on tourists to survive, and also warned us about beggars and people who would tie bracelets on us then demand money.

We were shown to our room at the Singh Brothers - a large triple room with a tv and a private bathroom with a warm shower. Our room even had a great wifi connection, despite it being the furthest room along the balcony.

As we were intending to climb Adam's Peak to watch the sun rise, we knew we needed an early night so we just had a quick walk around the village and had some noodles in Tinu Inn before going back to our room.
