Our night at Bunkyard Hostel cost 3500rs, including breakfast. The room had air con, the beds were comfy and the showers and toilets were nice and clean. The only downside was the location being quite far from town (and the lack of beer) but we would consider booking again if we are in Colombo.

Breakfast was omelette on toast and yogurt (or curd?) with honey. We then got a tuktuk to Colombo fort station (300rs) to catch the train to Hikkaduwa for 180rs each for the two hour journey. The first half of the journey was very cramped and we were stood, the locals were very kind and offered to keep our bags between them where they were sat - this seemed to be the norm and where baggage goes (people where passing their baggage through the windows to the people sat down before boarding the train themselves). There were people walking down the isle of the train selling various foods and drinks thougout the journey.

We walked about 3km to find our guesthouse, to then be told we'd walked about 1km past it. The locals were (again) very friendly and helpful in directing us the right way.

On the way we stopped and had a fresh mango juice each (320rs) and bought a water and a Sprite (200rs).

After checking in and dropping off our bags we had a quick dip in the sea, then walked the length of the beach. The beach is very short (between the buildings and the sea) but it was not busy at all; we were the only ones on the beach in our area other than people walking past.

Dinner was in Munchies because they had free wifi (and the menu sounded good!) - sweet and sour chicken, vegetable noodles and four drinks for 1470rs. Total spent today - 5790rs // £28.95
