Sri Lanka Day 1: Negombo to Colombo

We woke up at around 9am after a late night arrival and getting to sleep around 2am and had a really tasty traditional breakfast cooked by Rasika’s wife, Chemi. Then we sat down to plan what we’re doing in the next couple of days as the forecast was not looking like great beach weather so we were debating doing our route in reverse and doing the south coast in the second week instead but after some deliberation we decided to stick to our original plan.

Rasika and Chemi then very kindly dropped us at the bus station in Negombo on the way to pick their daughter up from school (we were a bit jealous because it was 1.30pm.. but then we learnt that schools starts at 7.30am) and helped us get a bus to Colombo (which cost 256rs for both of us). When we arrived in Colombo we stopped in a small cafe and had a biriyani and two waters in a cafe for lunch (650rs) and gave up walking around with our bags and got a tuktuk to the Bunkyard hostel (220rs). After checking in and dropping off our bags we walked a couple of miles to Galle Face Green to watch the sunset over the sea and grabbed some street food for a quick tea (no idea what it was but it was good) for 150rs. We thought Galle Face Green didn’t quite live up to what we were expecting; it looked good when we arrived but we quickly realised that there were only 3 or 4 different types of stalls which were then repeated all the way up the green - selling the same stuff at the same price - but it was still a nice walk and a good sunset.

When we got back we chilled downstairs and attempted to make friends but the lack of Dutch courage wasn’t very helpful. A few of us in the hostel debated going out and getting some but the closest shop was ~30 minute walk so we thought more about our plan for the next couple of days: in the end we changed plans slightly and decided to head to Hikkaduwa beach tomorrow instead of a spending a second day in Colombo.
